An edit to my earlier post:
holding Ctrl and using the scroll wheel allows you to zoom in on any part of your desktop. might be faster and easier than the monitor resolution adjustment.

There are no preferences in iCal that I can see to change/increase the size of the fonts in the calendars themselves. Apple forums proved to be a bust. I'm thinking there may be a solution via the Terminal or via a conf file somewhere.
Any help would be appreciated.

iCal .. there are no options.. even in the preferences to change the font size ..
so ..
1. Drop the screen resolution on the mac to enlarge ALL fonts
2. If it is ONLY iCal that he wants larger fonts then you'll have to use HACKS.. they may make iCal unstable but worth a try. Silk is the most specific solution I can offer

Obviously this isn't a direct solution, but the low tech option would be reducing your monitor resolution.
