hijack virus redirecting browser on the internet when click links

Hello,
A friend of mine bought a apple computer a few weeks ago- I don't know anything about apple- have worked on regular pc's with windows os's.
It was working great - he loves it BUT NOW:
He told me when goes on a website and clicks a link - his browser is being redirected.
I thought apple was mostly free from the hijack viruses regular pc's experience with windows.

any initial ideas of what he has and how to cure it?
