If you have Leopard or Snow Leopard you can use Time Machine which comes free with the OS. It's even better than Acronis.
You need a separate partition, preferably a separate internal or external hard drive, bigger than your boot partition.

That's true. Apple recommend that it be bigger, but it depends of course, upon how much data you have on the backed up partition(s).
It needs to be significantly bigger than the data you're backing up. The initial backup is roughly the same size as the backed up data, but subsequently there are 24 hourly differential backups, 30 daily differential backups, and similarly 4 weekly and subsequent monthly backups.
Older monthly backups are removed sequentially when the drive fills up.
I'm using an iMac which is 3 days old. So far I have 53GB on my HD. The Time Machine now totals 62GB.
I've just switched to Mac since June. I've used Acronis True Image with Windows for years and I promote it on my website. It's a great product which no Windows user should be without. The feel of Time Machine is a little different to that of Acronis, but once you get used to it, it's at least as good.
And it's free.
