I want to completely backup all data on my mac os x g5 and reinstall macos x. For pc I use acronis or ghost. Is there a free or cheap comprable program to this for mac that will allow me to make a complete & exact image of the hard drive so I can go back if need be?

Mike Bombich's CCC (carbon copy cloner). Used it since it first came out many years ago.
The current version plays ads from recognizable Mac vendors (nothing scummy or inappropriate for office or home). Paid upgrade kills that.

You can use Time Machine which comes free with the OS. It's somewhat different in concept to Acronis True Image and Ghost, but every bit as good.
You need a separate partition, preferably a separate internal or external hard drive.

A friend of mine uses Carbon Copy Cloner.

He had to use it twice untill now, but he never had any problem with it, to be sure, check that your os is:
- Mac OS 10.4 Tiger (10.4.8 or higher)
- Mac OS 10.5 Leopard
- Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard
