G4 has strange intermittent power problems

Asked by spectrumtech in Apple Hardware, Apple Desktop

When I first booted this G4 running OS X 10.4, it booted fine.  I worked on some little issues like removing things from starting at boot, chasing a Norton Liveupdate problem, etc. for probably 1/2 hr or more.  I left the room for a few minutes and when I came back the computer had shut down.  Ever since then I have tried lots of things including replacing RAM, power supply, resetting PMU, running diagnostics from the Apple CD (all passed).  The problem is sometimes it will power on, sometimes it won't.  I also have an Apple display connected with a power button on the front of it.  The power button on the front of the computer will pulse, but not allow enough juice to start anything.  The power button on the display, if you hold your finger on it, will start the fans, etc. until there is a loud beep that will last as long as you continue holding your finger on the power button.  Once you remove your finger, the power shuts off.
I tried another power supply, but nothing changed.  Sometimes I get no power at all, not even a light anywhere.  I'm thinking it might be a heat issue, but I'm not sure where.  Any help will be appreciated.Start Free Trial
