reset macbook root password

bought a second hand macbook and didnt know the root password. do i have to buy the os disks or can i reset it another way

Open Application->Utilities->Netinfo.app  and go to users section and select root user and change the passwd.

when i turn it on it asks for name and password

then try to hold command+S when u r mac restarts it take u to single user more there u can reset u r root password using command
passwd
then enter new passwd and then chk /Users directory if u see any folder then they are existing users in you macbook u cannot login using root at GUI. so change the passwd for those username listed in /Users dir
say
passwd <foldername>
and enter the new passwd.
and quit to restart your mac.

not work it says:
 launch_msg() : Socket is not connected
passwd : Unable to open Directory node with name /Local/default.  unable to open node.

are you in to single user mode did u hold cmd + s key when mac is rebooting.

yes the screen says:for troubleshooting assistance, just type 'applejack' at prompt.

If you see the Applejack help text, then you are indeed in Single User mode. All you have to do is type:

passwd

and then hit the Enter or Return key. Then type a password and hit Return. It will ask you to reenter it. retype it and hit enter. Your password will now be changed for the Administrator account. You should now type:

restart

and hit enter.
