Last night, my little sister was using my computer for who knows what. I opened my computer this morning and all of a sudden it's been so slow, it's unbearable. Starting my computer took 5 minutes for everythign to lead. everything i do takes two minutes, and then the spinning beach ball pops up. What I've done so far is restart/reboot the computer. I've done this like 5 times, and it gets slower and slower each time. I've also tried going to disk utility. It seems like firefox is the culprit, but I don't know. the spinning beach ball thingy as my cursor is driving me insane.
i was looking around for some help and i saw someone said to check the console.app on the utilities folder and this is what i found for my console.log...

No it's not. i'm trying to do a virus scan with Norton antivirus in the safe mode. so far it's been taking about 2 hours and yet it's done with about 5% of the way. hopefully this will help solve it. Also in safe mode it's back to normal speed, so i'm glad it's not exactly the harddrive that's the problem, i hope. is there anything i can do ion safemode that will fix it in nomral mode?
Not that I am aware of.
You say you have "have 58.26 gb used and 58.26 gb free on my macintosh HD". Are you sure you are reading that right? It seems an odd coincidence that you have used exactly 50% of your drive. You could have the problems you describe if you were running out of free space on your drive.
on another note i just realized spotlight is not working.. this might be because iw as tryiong to clear my desktop and started putting big folders into other folders? again is there a way to UNDO something done on my mac?
Why is spotlight not working is there a way to fix this? On safe mode, spotlight is not working, maybe this is why my macbook is so slow?
The Spotlight database may be corrupted. You can force Spotlight to rebuild it by adding the affected disk to the Spotlight Privacy exclusions in System Preferences, closing System Preferences, then removing it from the exclusion list. Spotlight will begin rebuilding the Spotlight database immediately. (This may take several hours.)
Suggest you try this and let the computer re-index overnight, then see if performance is better in the morning.
You could also try downloading the freeware Onyx: http://www.titanium.free.f
and running the various cleanup and maintenance routines from it.
The instructions I gave you to force a re-index of Spotlight were for Leopard. Not sure they will work in Tiger. If not, try this utility: http://www.versiontracker.
To force a re-index in Tiger, open the Terminal application (in the \applications\utilities folder) and copy and paste the following line into the terminal window, then hit return:
sudo mdutil -E /
(You may be asked for your system password).
Reboot your computer and Spotlight should start to re-index.
hm, no i tried adding my HD to the privacy list, however it can't be added. like it physically won't be added to the privacy list no matter how many times i tried dragging it to the privacy list. even when i try to add my hd to the list, it does not get added to the list. also when i do the sudo mdutil -E / it says volume not found. I think i found my problem though, spotlight indexing.
I couldn't do it in safe mode, but I could do it in regular mode although getting to it was so slow. Now that my HD is under the privacy tab on my spot light preferences, my computer is back to normal speed. Thank god!! phew. all i have to do is reformat everything. IF not, I don't even need spotlight. i hope this forum helps others with slow macbooks!!
