after choosing about this mac, you should select "More Info"... then you'll see it under disc burning.

Here are the specs for the new MacBook Pros. It does look like it supports double-layer DVDs.

I have the 15" Macbook Pro that came out just before the recent ones with the SD slot built into them, but still the new unibody style. Mine does support burning DL discs. Here is the output from the System Profiler. Notice mine supports -R & +R DL in the DVD Write section.

Hi
On your desktop, upper left is the apple, left click and choose "about this mac." You'll see it under Disc Burning.
Verbatim makes good discs.
