Lets hope this is not a hardware fault!
1. Reboot using install/restore DVD and press-hold CMD+D and run harwdare diagnostics
2. It maybe brightness has reset so go to System Preferences and check.
3. If external is OK, it could be LED/LCD panel is faulty.
If 1 or 2 don't work, then, assuming you are in warranty, take it to Apple Store who should repair it free of charge.
