Question

Run an Access database on Mac?

Asked by: gregdaly

Can any one offer advice about what I would need to do to run an MS Access database application on a G5 Mac?  The Access application has VBA code behind forms (thought that fact might be relevant).

Thanks for help.

Virtual PC perhaps?  That is the only way I can think of to get the forms and such to work.  You can probably access the data in the tables with a native DB application, but the forms, reports, etc will require the actual Access program to be running.  The only way that I know of to do that on a Mac is with Virtual PC.

I concur with the Virtual PC recommendation - Access is a windows only format, so you'd need a copy of Virtual PC with Windows (preferably the same Windows version used on the PC), along with a copy of Microsoft Office Professional or a standalone copy of Access to run under Windows.

If you wan't the appearance to be like on a PC then go for the VirtualPC solution, if  speed and use on a mac is more relevant then go for SQL DB (you can export the SQL code from MS Access and use that one)

OpenOffice Beta 2.0 (free) has a database app included with it.  It can open Access files(and just about any other).  I have tested it a little on Linux, and it works reasonably well.  However, it is not available for Mac yet.  If this need is not urgent, I would wait for this to come out for Mac. (The source code is out there right now if you're feeling REALLY lucky)  I would try this first before I buy Virtual PC.  Dont know about the VBA, Virtual PC might be the only option for that.

Hope this helps
Matt

OpenOffice's db program is definitely a beta.  Base is nowhere near ready for public consumption.  I spent about 4 hours trying to create a simple form and the fields kept jumping all over the screen.  It does hold lots of promise though.  It can import or export just about every type of DB imaginable.  I actually was just playing with Access DBs again recently.  Base was able to import the tables just fine, but all of the forms, reports, macros...everything useful was lost.  Maybe one day...

There is also an OS X version of MySQL available for free.  If you're using Access, then MySQL would be like using a sledge hammer to kill a fly, but it is another option.  You'd need to find something else to create the forms, reports, etc.  MySQL is just a back end CLI program.  I haven't yet found any decent front end programs to interface with a MySQL database.  I keep hoping that they'll release Rekall for OS X.
