The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

powerbook wont connect via ethernet port to netgear wnr3500

Asked by dwils15 in Networking Hardware for Macintosh, Network Routers, Apple Laptop

I have a powerbookg4 that has been connected to a linsys wrt54g for years. It worked both wireless and wired. (recently i only used wired)
Yesterday I bought a netgear wnr3500 for the wireless N and gigabit ports in hopes of speeing up a vpn connection.
I have a powermac, and ip printer that connect perfectly to the routers ports, and my powerbook and a hp laptop that , and 2 iphones that connect perfectly though wireless.
The problem is that I want my powerbook, which is only wireless G, to connect through the gigabit ports on the router, since it has a gigabit port on the machine.
When I plug the powerbook into the router, the router doesnt even show that anything is connected to that port. ive tried all 4 ports, and 3 different wires (all cables work with different machines, on every port.)
-ive tried allowing dhcp on the powerbook
-dhcp with manual ip
-manual

it always  says that the ethernet cable is unplugged.

If i pull that cable out of the netgear, and plug it into my old linksys, it will get an ip address and connect immediately.

How do I make the powerbook realize it IS plugged in to the netgear router?
The only difference between the ports is that the netgear has gigabit, and the linksys has 100mb. The powerbook is supposed to have a gigabit port.
If I go under the network prefs for the ethernet, and manually change the port to use 100basetx then it works. Auto select wont work, and 1000baseT wont work. Why wont my gigabit port work with a gigabit router?
