My mac won't pick up cable wireless internet access easily even though the pc in my office does?

My desktop is a Mac pro running Leopard but is really poor at picking  up the wireless signal - the pc n my office doesn't seem to have any troube (It's not amazingly fast but perfectly useable).The machines are two rooms away from the receiver. I have tried a booster Linksys- G Range Expander but it doesn't really help and I've tried a mac usb receiver (mac wifi G54) which is just as useless. My internet service is currently running like a DIAL UP (and a poor one at that!)  not the cable that it actually is.
Can anyone help I am being driven demented
