Mac wont boot into target disk mode

Hi,

I have a Intel Mac (White one) that refuses to boot into target disk mode or boot from the network. It will boot from the CD, otherwise upon holding down the keys T or N it ignores them and boots into the OS. Is there a way to fix this so it boots like any other normal mac? I also have a feeling that the firmware may have been modified by another party from talking to a few Mac know how people on how this might occur.
