Question

iMac 2nd monitor sleep problem

Asked by: RobertNZana

I have my iMac hooked up to my Dell 17" 1703FP monitor.  Works great usually.  Sometimes when I "awaken" my sleeping iMac only the iMac comes on.  The Dell monitor is totally asleep. The only way to get it working is to go into System Preferences/Displays/Gather Windows and toggle the Dell monitor's resolution to something else then back and it wakes up. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix this? Thanks!

What sort of adapter are you using to connect the Dell monitor to the Mac?

If you are using a USB to DVI adapter, try the manufacturer's web site for updated software or firmware.

I have a MAC Pro with Dual monitors and when it comes out of sleep the Primary monitor that is connected via Mini DVI shows snow. The secondary monitor is fine and I can see the mouse move on it. This happened since I bought it not more than a month ago. Applecare sent a technician out to replace the ATI Radeon 4870 video card and the same thing happens. Tested each connection and it only happens on the mini DVI port on the card. Applecare sent "capture" software to collect data recorded during the event. They had no answers other than they are working on it. All the evidence points to Snow Leopard (I have 10.6.2 at the time of this post) issue and they are working on a solution which will most likely come in an up coming OS update. This is the only issue I have had with my new Mac Pro. Everything else works fine. I know you have an iMac, but I thought this might shed some light. When they come up with a solution or update for me I'll post.

not really the answer but....

Have you escalated this to a Technician in order to obtain the capture software to send to their Engineering department for further investigation? This is apparently a known error within Snow Leopard. So far there are no accepted solutions. I've read about the same symptoms for their Macbook Pros. Did you perform the upgrade to Snow Leopard or did your iMac come with it preinstalled? You could try backing up your data and making sure you have all your softwares handy and reinstall the OS clean. I unfortunately don't have that as an option in my situation.

I believe this was happening before Snow Leopard but I don't recall.  I haven't submitted anything to Apple... yet.  I upgraded.  Thanks.

No problem. Keep me informed if you do actually decide to do a clean install and if you can get the problem to replicate after. If you open a ticket with AppleCare request the capture software. That will speed things along for you at the very least. Good luck.
