I have a MAC Pro with Dual monitors and when it comes out of sleep the Primary monitor that is connected via Mini DVI shows snow. The secondary monitor is fine and I can see the mouse move on it. This happened since I bought it not more than a month ago. Applecare sent a technician out to replace the ATI Radeon 4870 video card and the same thing happens. Tested each connection and it only happens on the mini DVI port on the card. Applecare sent "capture" software to collect data recorded during the event. They had no answers other than they are working on it. All the evidence points to Snow Leopard (I have 10.6.2 at the time of this post) issue and they are working on a solution which will most likely come in an up coming OS update. This is the only issue I have had with my new Mac Pro. Everything else works fine. I know you have an iMac, but I thought this might shed some light. When they come up with a solution or update for me I'll post.
Have you escalated this to a Technician in order to obtain the capture software to send to their Engineering department for further investigation? This is apparently a known error within Snow Leopard. So far there are no accepted solutions. I've read about the same symptoms for their Macbook Pros. Did you perform the upgrade to Snow Leopard or did your iMac come with it preinstalled? You could try backing up your data and making sure you have all your softwares handy and reinstall the OS clean. I unfortunately don't have that as an option in my situation.

What sort of adapter are you using to connect the Dell monitor to the Mac?
