Problem retrieving email from Exchange server with original Iphone with updated 2.0 software

Can get mail fine if I'm on my internal wireless lan but if I try to retrieve email using the Edge net work I get the error message that the connection to the server failed

Is this because I have have not updated my data plan to reflect AT&T's new policy (or Apples) that you need to pay extra to connect to a corporate Exchange server?

I know this is the first day but wondering if anyone has any insight on this...should I be able to connect to my Exchange Server over the Edge Network or do I need to upgrade my data plan before that will happen?
