Question

How set up IMAP for iPhone on Exchange 2003?

Asked by: jimshock

I'm attempting to set up IMAP on Exchange 2003 so we can test the iPhone on it.  We've never used IMAP.  I started the Service, but I can't find in Exchange Manager where to set up the name of the incoming smtp server required for the iPhone setup.  Can anyone assist?

Enter the public DNS name for your server.  Probably something like mail.domain.com .

Our OWA is at mail.ourdomain.com, I entered that, and got the 'verification failed, incoming server may be incorrect, IMAP must be enabled' message

mail.domain.com hopefully resolves to the public IP address of your router, so the name should be good for everything you use (SMTP, OWA, IMAP, whatever).  The router needs to be configured to forward incoming port 143 (for IMAP) traffic to your Exchange server.  Can you verify that it has been?

Here is some information that assisted us in getting the IPhone to work:

1. Firewall permit IMAP connections from 32.0.0.0/255.0.0.0(AT&T GPRS network)
2. Exchange accounts configure IMAP for each email account.
3. Configure IPHONE with basic account name (i.e. john.smith) no DNS suffix etc...
4. Authenication type: password
5.. Attempt to connect, let it fail. the modify the following:

SSL OFF under ADVANCED options
OUTGOING MAIL SERVER for (ATT): cwmx.com

You don't get calendaring or contacts but eh thats on Apple to license something from Microsoft.
