IPod Touch 2G downgrade

Is it possible to downgrade an Ipod Touch 2G from 3.3.1 to 2.2.1? I'd like to jailbreak it, but, as far as I know, there aren't any solutions for 3.3.1 firmware.

As long as you UPGRADED to 3.3.1 than you can downgrade, but if 3.3.1 was already installed when you bought the ipod (Assuming you bought it from Apple/a reseller such as Bestbuy or Futureshop.).

To downgrade,
- First download a copy of the firmware you want to downgrade to, in this case 2.2.1.
- Open iTunes
- Plug in your iPod touch
- Hold down "Shift" and click restore
- Now look for your 2.2.1 firmware and double click on it

Your iPod should be restoring now. Also, there IS a jailbreak available for 3.0 firmware, so downgrading to 2.2.1 isn't necessary.

I bought it from Ebay so I don't know whether it was upgraded or it had 3.3.1 from the start.
I've tried what you suggested above but I get an Error 20 message. I've googled the problem (before asking the question here) and found various suggestions (use iTunes 8.2 or 7.5 etc.), but nothing worked for me. I cannot downgrade either to 2.2.1 or to 3.0 (I've tried both firmwares)
Yes, I'm aware that there is a jailbreak for 3.0 but, again, I cannot downgrade from 3.3.1 at all (I didn't care if I had to downgrade to 3.0 or to 2.2.1)

Well, if you bought it BEFORE September 9th then you SHOULD be able to downgrade it.

Try putting your iPod in DFU mode before restoring.

You  can do this by
-Turning off your iPod
-Hold down the Sleep/Power button for 5 secs
-Without letting go of the Sleep/Power button, hold down the Home button for 10 secs
-Without letting go of the Home button, release the Sleep/Power button and keep holding down the Home button for 25 secs

After putting your iPod in DFU mode, try the Shift-Restore method I first posted.

I've tried that before and I've tried it once again after I read your message. I get the same error message:

'The Ipod cannot be restored. An unknown error occurred (20)' Again, I"ve tried with both firmwares.

I use Vista Ultimate 64 and I have ITunes 8.2.1 (64)

I had a similar problem when I first tried this, except it was a different error.

What I did was ...

-When it gave me a error, I pulled out the usb from my computer
-Closed
 iTunes
-Re-opened iTunes
-Plugged USB back into computer
-Than try Shift-Restoring again


If you REALLY want to jailbreak,you could try resetting everything on iPod. (I'm not sure if this resets it to factory shipped state, so basically 2.2.1 OR if it just wipes out everything on your iPod but firmware.)

*NOTE* This puts your iPod in restore mode, so if you can't "Normal Restore" I would highly suggest you don't do this.*NOTE*


To do this,
-Go to "Settings" on your iPod
-Go to "General"
-Go to "Reset"
-Press "Erase All Content and Settings"

I suggest trying the first method than telling me what happened.

The first method didn't work.
I guess the unit is a 3rd-generation Apple iPod after all...(model no. MC086LL). Maybe that's why it doesn't work.
As I said, I just got it and I assumed it was older than September 9, but I cannot really be sure.
