iTunes erased playlists without warning - are they gone forever?

At one time, when an iPod synchronized with a different computer was plugged into a new computer, a warning would appear on the screen giving you a chance to eject the iPod before it was erased.

Today, the iPod touch I plugged in was just overwritten, without warning, destroying all the playlishts.

Would the old playlists be on the ipod in any recoverable form?
If I could get an old copy of the iTunes Library, could the playlists be extracted?

You should have the playlist on the original computer that you used to fill the iPod

I was looking for a way to extract the playlists from some sort of file that existed on the computer.
