ipod - please connect to itunes to restore

I have an ipod video 5 gen, that when i connect to iTunes it says that it has detected a corrupted iPod and needs to restored.  i do a restore but the message just seems to loop round and round.  when my iPod is disconnected from the computer i can access all the iPod menus Playlists, Music etc.  what is wrong? how do i fix it?  ThanksStart Free Trial
