Well something you haven't stated is the model/capacity of your IPod and aproximate date of purchase
It may be the battery or the hard disk or the logic board ar it was droped and something dissconeted inside.
Navigate in this page, it has several links and possible test for your IPod

I'm at the office now and I can't access it.
Sounds like the docking port is malfunctioning. Does it do anything when you hook up an AC charger? If the AC charger and the USB cable don't work, then sounds like your dock port is bad. This would mean that your logic board is bad. If you want to get it fixed, then it will most likely run you about $119. You can also buy the part yourself and do it. If there isn't any attachment to the iPod,you should invest in a new one. Let me know what you find out.

If you have a charger, charge it;
If you can`t try the following with the IPod disconnected from the computer.
Reset it by clicking on the center and top of the cklick wheel,
connect it to your computer
Any changes?
