Question

what is causing ipod shuffle driver to install/then uninstall?.

Asked by: rcrook1

When I plug the device in a usb port autorun runs momentarily and the device appears in my computer and as a usb mass storge device in device manager. Then when autorun quits the device i.e. ipod shuffle disappears from both places.

When I sync from itunes it says it synced and finished, but none of my mp3 files are down loaded to my   ipod shuffle .

When i look in device manager there is an exclamation mark next to the usb mass storage device and when I click on properties it tells me that windows is uninstalling the device code 21. I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes which did nothing to correct the problem. I have the latest versions software and firm ware for the device. Please see the itunes dignostic report below, it says everything is fine, but obviously it is not:

It may be that "current user is not an administrator"
Or you may need to change the security settings as it's possible that vista is not letting you to write to an USB device.

Is iTunes open when you plug in the Shuffle?  If not try that.

If you still have a problem then let's try running the iTunes program as Administrator (sort of expanding on what xema said above).  Right mouse click on the icon or menu option you use to start iTunes.  Choose the option to Run As Administrator.  Then try again by starting iTunes first and then plugging in Shuffle.  Does that work?

If it does then you could try removing the check to Run As Administrator (you may have to go to Properties to do this).  It may have just needed to run that way the first time you synced.  If the problem recurs then you will have to keep that setting (at least until their is some iTunes "fix").

Let me know if you have a question.

Hello xema, b0lsc0tt:,

I have administrator priviledges under my user account in control panel. When I right  click on the itunes icon in the programs/start menu there is no no run as administrator opion offered, it does not exist as one of the options.

I currently have 14 mp3 files in my music library in itunes. In itunes when I right click on one of the mp3 files and select add to play list "dads ipod" the shuffle synced correctly and down loaded two of the files to my shuffle.

When I do the same exact thing to the remaining 12 files I get the following message from itunes " ... was not copied to the ipod because you are not authorized to play it on this computer" and the sync down load does not transfer the file(s) to my shuffle.

This leaves me to believe there is something amiss with these 12 files, what do you think? if you agree what do I need to do to correct the problem with these 12 files?

Thank you for your help.

Hello xema, b0lsc0tt:,

I think I have found the cause of my problems. When I right click on the files in my music library and select "get info" the two that downloaded successfully say " purchased acc audio file" please disregard my comments concerning mp3 I was in error.

The remaining 12 When I right click on the files in my music library and select "get info" say "protected acc audio file"

I purchased all 14 of these files from the itunes store in one sitting.

What do I need to do to get rid of this "protected " designation" and make it say "purchased" like the other two?

To clarify all were purchased and charged to my credit card on the same date.

Please reply, thank you.

Thanks for the response and info.  I think I was mislead by the info in the question body.  It sounds like your are syncing you just can't put all the songs on.

Are those files protected content (i.e.  music purchased from iTunes with DRM)?  If so you need to Authorize that computer.  Is it already authorized with another account?  If not then click on Advanced and use it to authorize the computer.

Are the files from someone else?  If your computer is already authorized and/or they are someone else's music then let us know.

The iTunes program will prevent you from putting DRM songs or content on an iPod if you aren't authorized to play it in iTunes.

b0lsc0tt,

Twelve of the files are files protected content (i.e.  music purchased from iTunes with DRM)  Your comment about needing to  Authorize the (my) computer was spot on. I found the authorize command under the store tab  in itunes. I completed the authorize and did a autofill in itunes and everything synced perfectly, all 14 of my files down loaded to the shuffle without a problem. The shuffle is working fine and the audio is great.

I have one last question: Since the authorize is critical for syncing/down loading files why is there absolutely no mention of its need with the literature for the device, no upfront warning in itunes, or no warning when I purchased these files from istore.? If I had known this before hand two days ago I could have saved myself a lot of grief and aggravation. Thanks for your excellant help, I will award you all the points with a grade of A after I submit this note. Problem solved, great job. Thanks again.

Your welcome!  I'm glad I could help.

Regarding your last question the error message you shared in the comment at http:#21300968 was a real tell of the problem.  If you saw that message earlier then it was just a matter of not realizing its significance.

Since you are logged into buy the music nothing comes up then but iTunes probably relies on playing to prompt and monitor this.  iTunes should also bring up a message if you try to use it to play the file.  If the program is ever logged out then this is the time when you would find out.  This would be the way people catch the problem when using a new computer.

You don't get a notice when you buy the music or content because the notice or terms are shown when you set up the account.  It is actually nice Apple doesn't make you agree to it each time.  It is just part of the terms of your account.

I definitely would've been nice for you to have known this from the start and have it be clear.  Of course then you may not have needed my help. :-)  Since your iTunes program is usually always authorized it is easy to forget this but it it something shown when you set up your account.  I am almost positive it is in the install process of iTunes.

Thanks for the grade, the points and the fun question.  Let me know if you have a question about this.  I'm glad I could help.
