Hi Paradise,
Thank you for your input. I tried what you suggested, however to no avail.
I have yet to take it apart following your instructions, however will try so. At this point i've given up and have bought another (used) ipod nano 2gb...
I'm not sure how to close this question seeing as the solution didn't fix my problem, so to say it is accepted is not true, however it was very appreciated, and you definitely deserve points for the effort...
Thanks again!

I had this with my 2GB black nano and found that letting the battery run out completely and then recharging it fixed the issue.

However, I did have it recur at seeming odd times -- I was never able to figure out what the real issue is/was. But, I am thinking dropping it isn't going to help :)
If none of these issues work, you might have a hardware issue with the buttons. I am thinking that if you did a hard reset and you can't get the buttons to respond to the language screen that the only reasonable explanation is a problem with the button connection to the main board of the nano.
*If* you are desperate at this point you could take the whole darned thing apart and clean it out, look for visible connection issues. So, if you got it wet or something like that you can take some rubbing alcohol and clean it out.
This site is VERY helpful for the iPod take apart: http://www.mobilepartstore
Hope this helps!!
