what happens when you open iTunes ?
if the iPod doesn't have allocated space for "data storage" then it probalby does'nt have anything that can be seen by windows.
if it doesn't get seen by iTunes then try and reset the iPod (down arrow + menu)  !?! (I think)

Using iPod as a drive

   1. Connect iPod to your computer.
   2. Open iTunes if it doesn't automatically open.
   3. Select the iPod icon in the Source pane.
   4. Click the Summary tab.
   5. For most iPod models (except iPod shuffle):
Select "Enable disk use" or "Manually manage songs and videos". Either one will allow you to use iPod as a drive. If you select "Manually manage songs and videos", iTunes won't automatically update iPod with the iTunes library. If you want iTunes to automatically update your iPod, select "Enable disk use" instead.

I was trying to get at what the primary format was originally as a Mac formatted pod won't show up in Windows while a fat 32 one will show up in both. Then to follow up and see if it shows up on a Mac. In any case if the pod does not respond to the little switch reset and will not show up in finder/explorer then the Genuis bar people will basically this: "You are out of luck. It is not worth fixing. Go buy a new one." I brought two clickwheel 80 gb  pod into the Genius Bar recently and was told they were paperweights. Well actually, I said they were paper weights truth be told. I walked out, however, with no intention of them being down for the count as they are only not worth fixing if you have to pay for someone else to do it. The drives are available on ebay and I can always risk opening up something that is already broken.  That being said I did not buy new drives or open them up yet both are right now up and running. I did a little web searching and found the whack them in just the right way method. Read this thread and it associated links. http://supamb.com/supafine/2006/02/16/resurrecting-your-dead-ipod-whack-a-mole-theory/  I followed the whack it during bootup technique and both are now working. One slightly less well than the other as I have to rewhack it about once a month. You will know for sure that you have a good candidate for this method if you hold your pod to your ear and hear a clicking drive noise while it attempts to boot. this method works because either A you free up the sticking platter by the shock of the impact or b you shake a loose cable back into contact. good luck.

oh,man, that's a russian advice ,first time heard in America,I'll try to remember it when I get enough vodka to have my $200 ipod whacked :)))
Anyway,I'm able to restart it and it seems like pc can recognise it as usv device but doesn't see partition so I really don't see how whacking would help, looks like I need something that can doctor the bad partition ,something good and possibly free

simply - plug in the device and get iTunes t reset the device.  then configure it how you want.
please see:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/ipodresetutility103formac.html
just follow apples advice.

Yes that was my first suggestion but it seemed as if you are indicating iTunes would not recognize it ergo no restore option was going to work. Apple writes off ipod if itunes cannot restore it. Thus the nothing to loose "Russian model" For me it worked and restored two 60 gb/s back to life but mine was either sticking spindles or loose cables. yours sounds as if it is an incredibly corrupt partition but restore is the only ipod utility you can use. Just in case you just can't find the restore tab look at this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT133
If you can find a working link to the windows podzilla 2 linux installer then you can try installing linux as either the complete partition or a "dual" boot. " Back in Podzilla one days I used that trick to get a good drive with a hopelessly corrupt Apple partition to install the linux partition. Itunes then did recognize the device and I could then use the itunes restore feature to get a clean boot partition. Problem is that Apple got nervous when podzilla 1 got a working video player and changed the firmware in 2008 so that podzilla 1 died. Podzille two is still reported to be working(at least enough hopefully to reformaty your hard pod drive) but the sites links are down. P2p sources may still have them. You may also be able to get a windows floydziila installer if you look carefuly.
This link may also do the trick http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/ipod-modding/8644-5g-easy-installation-tutorial.html
misc try this: This is for people in the future who encounter this error! First, attempt to repair ipod through disk utility, if that fails hold down the menu and the center button until the apple sign appears, then as soon as quickly as you can hold the center button and the play button down. When the disk symbol shows up in the middle of the ipod, hook it up to your computer and enjoy!
another long shot :Okay, so after much to do with searching forums and getting nowhere, I decided to experiment on my own and have come up with a solution to this dreaded -1416 error...it requires some finagling in Terminal, but should not be too hard.

First, connect the iPod to your computer and open Terminal. Type:

diskutil list

You will get a list something to the effect of:

/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *931.5 Gi disk0
1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 931.2 Gi disk0s2
/dev/disk1
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Apple_partition_scheme *27.9 Gi disk2
1: Apple_partition_map 31.0 Ki disk2s1
2: Apple_MDFW 64.0 Mi disk2s2
3: Apple_HFS Hobbsits iPod 27.9 Gi disk2s3

So, basically, disk 0 above is my computer's internal HD and disk 1 is my iPod in this case. Remember the number of your iPod disk.

Open Disk Utility. Basically, you have to unmount the drive to make it formatable without the "Resource in Use" error....at least in my case. So, eject the disk in Disk Utility (the application).

Once ejected, go back to Terminal and type this command:

sudo diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ iPod disk1

Where the "1" in disk1 is replaced by whatever number your iPod appeared as in the list from the diskutil list command. You may be prompted for your admin password, so type it in if prompted.

Once the iPod is formatted, pop open iTunes (if it does not auto-pop) and restore it.

And explode into dance.

Cheers,

Hobbsit

I just can't believe it , I followed "russian" advice and it actually worked, though NOT in a consistent manner,it worked about 10 minutes, then went to its regular,"invisible" mode once again...
and  not through regular laptop connection but through vmware virtual machine I'm able now to see my dear with purchuased artwork on it ,one that I couldn't download again. You know this Apple's rule of 1 time download only,I've spent $25 on Ultimate fighting series and the only place I had it was this 80G , I stopped using Itunes althogether when I saw their infamous 1 time download only rule. The life's back:))) . pheidius,You're getting the points, though still, man,I can't believe ,how this thing works?. I gave it pretty big smack ,it started again, but it only "lives" for 10 mins or so,then "dies" again....

by: oleggoldPosted on 2009-08-13 at 11:58:31ID: 25091647

And here what was:
I whacked it once again and it started spinning like crazy, then I saw I can get it out of it's case and the craziest thing happened, when it came out ther was 3 power belts coming going from disk to the screen and the usb cable, my shake must have been shake the usb cable out,I pinned it in with 2 fingers and it started spinning again .. for ab. 1/2 hour, then entirely new screen appeared ,like the old ipod ,v.2 ,not 4 ,the windows recognized it and offered restore,no choce really, still had 4 "ultimate  fighting " films on it,copied only 1 ,anyway ,hope it'll be back when restored, the case now looks really ugly .. that what "whacking " does, don't do it if You have any choice :))):((((

"ipod couldn't be restored", unknown error (1429).
Does it mean my Ipod gone?
