Try installing iTunes if you haven't already. If iTunes doesn't recognize it at all look on Apple's site and see how to reset the device for whichever generation you have. If iTunes recognizes it but gives an error message then try restoring the device using iTunes. If none of the above work it sounds like your friend may have sold you a lemon. :/ ...or the cable is bad.
