Apple Ipod DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED

Ok i bought a apple ipod from my friend.. but when i plug it in i get an error messasge that says Usb device not recognized.. and in the device manager it says unkown device..the ipod does not even charge correctly.. i have tried plugging it in other computers and i have the same results.. i have tried many things resetting  the ipod..uninstalling all the drivers etc.. i dont know what else to do..
