I can't restore the ipod in itunes because itunes doesn't recognize it. Itunes doesn't put the ipod on it's menuwhen I plug the ipod in.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a used Ipod classic that I bought on eBay. It works fine. It was formatted for mac when I got it. Itunes reformatted it and filled it with songs from my library on my Acer Aspire 9810 laptop. It works fine in my indoor sound system and in my truck. It will not, however, sync w/itunes again. I think I have done all the things usually recommended to get itunes to recognize an ipod. Windows recognizes it as a portable hard drive that has no files on it. Itunes doesn't recognize it at all. Any ideas what will happen if I just reformat it in windows as an 80gb hd?

Does it change anything to tell you that the ipod is working on both my home stereo with an ipod dock and in m y truck through the sound system? Also when I plug the ipod into my computer a message eventually pops up telling that my ipod needs to be reformatted to work with windows (that was actually done a while ago and the music that is now on my ipod is from my windows computer.) The message ask me if i want to open itunes to reformat my ipod. I say yes and itunes opens but nothing happens. There's no message in itunes that it is reformatting the ipod.
To nguyenlocduy: I can't reformat. Windows recognizes the ipod in device mgr as an apple ipod usb devices. But disk management in Administrative calls it a hard drive (drive p) but says there is no media. So I can't format it.
To ack154: I have reset the ipod numerous times but the problem of itunes not recognizing the ipod as a source remains.
To xema: Itunes works I have reinstalled it 4 or 5 times. When i plug the ipod in when itunes is already open, the ipod does not get added to the source list. Sometimes itunes freezes, sometimes the ipod freezes and needs to be reset, and sometime nothing at all happens.
The especially confusing part is the ipod works fine playing back music either in my truck, or on my home stereo, or with ear buds. All the function selections work fine and as expected. So I don't think it is a defective ipod.
I'm still looking for new things to try to get th ipod to sync so i can add music, videos, etc. I've got 55gb of empty space.

No, you should not format the iPod because there are files and programs that help the ipod to communicate with iTunes.
What you should do now is just restore the iPod using your iTunes.
