in-effect -
thank you for the response. I had done all that already, and it does play in order when I play the playlist - that was my "workaround".
The problem I am left with is that with the 200 LP's, 50 reel-to-reel, and 50 cassettes I will be capturing into digital form many (not all) will not go into the iTunes library in the order I want (particularly when the cassette tape or reel-to-reel was a compilation with different artists) - and this workaround will create an unmanageable number of playlists.
I am hoping (though I expect ot be disappointed) to find a way to get the tracks in the right order in the iTunes music library, without making a permanent playlist, so that they play in iTunes and on the ipod in the correct order when the libaray is in Album order.... obviously I will have to make up an album name for my self-made compilations
One solution I will be exploring further is to find a way to get the order right before importing into iTunes - sorting in my Roxio Easy C reator 8, but that software is proving surprisingly uncooperative (see earlier posted question). Sometimes iTunes and Roxio do not see eye to eye on the order I want.
BTW: I assume "Apple-i" is the same as "Ctrl i" for us PC owners :-)
Thanks again

You have to edit the tags of the tracks in the album. Do as follows:
- Create a playlist of all the tracks from the particular album (sounds like you've already done this).
- Highlight all the tracks in the playlist and press Apple-i - you will normally be asked if you want to edit information for multiple items. Say yes.
- Under 'Track Number' on the right hand side, change the last digit ('of') to the total number of tracks. Click OK to save changes.
- Now change the first digit of 'Track Number' for each track individually so they're all numbered in the correct order.
iTunes will now know which order to play the tracks in.
