Question

iTunes - controlling order of tracks and play order

Asked by: LRG15

iTunes - anyone know how to get the songs in the main library, within a particular album, in the track order I want.  For example, I have an album of a particular show captured off a commercial CD, but two of the tracks could not be read by my Matshita Drive (see prior question on that issue) - so I bought the two tracks from iTunes Store - but now can't get the new tracks to go in the right order - even with album title correctly identified (which is important if want the "story" from the show to go in proper sequence).

I managed to do a workaround by creating a playlist - putting in track numbers - and sorting on track numbers.

Is there anyway to do this WITHOUT creating a playlist - with the info "sorting function".  ... short of changing the names of the tracks by putting numbers in front of the name?

Will be capturing many, many hour of LP's, cassettes and reel-to-reel in my project, and will have the same "order" issue whenever dealing with an unofficial compilation.

Thanks for any assistance

You have to edit the tags of the tracks in the album. Do as follows:

- Create a playlist of all the tracks from the particular album (sounds like you've already done this).
- Highlight all the tracks in the playlist and press Apple-i - you will normally be asked if you want to edit information for multiple items. Say yes.
- Under 'Track Number' on the right hand side, change the last digit ('of') to the total number of tracks. Click OK to save changes.
- Now change the first digit of 'Track Number' for each track individually so they're all numbered in the correct order.

iTunes will now know which order to play the tracks in.

in-effect -

thank you for the response.  I had done all that already,  and it does play in order when I play the playlist - that was my "workaround".

The problem I am left with is that with the 200 LP's, 50 reel-to-reel, and 50 cassettes I will be capturing into digital form many (not all) will not go into the iTunes library in the order I want (particularly when the cassette tape or reel-to-reel was a compilation with different artists) - and this workaround will create an unmanageable number of playlists.

I am hoping (though I expect ot be disappointed) to find a way to get the tracks in the right order in the iTunes music library, without making a permanent playlist, so that they play in iTunes and on the ipod in the correct order when the libaray is in Album order.... obviously I will have to make up an album name for my self-made compilations

One solution I will be exploring further is  to find a way to get the order right before importing into iTunes - sorting in my Roxio Easy C reator 8, but that software is proving surprisingly uncooperative (see earlier posted question).  Sometimes iTunes and Roxio do not see eye to eye on the order I want.

BTW:  I assume "Apple-i" is the same as "Ctrl i" for us PC owners  :-)

Thanks again

As you've done it all correctly in the first place, you shouldn't have a problem. Provided the Album Title is correct and the track numbers are correct (including the 'of' number) then it will just work when ordered by album in the playlist. I can't see any reason why you would still have a problem to be honest.

In-effect:  The problem of the tracks getting out of order only occurs in 2 instances I know of:

(1) when (as with the soundtrack album with 2 non-readable tracks mentioned above) I do not bring all the tracks into iTunes the same time- and that doesn't happen that often -and the workaround is to create a playlist, as I have done

(2) when I bring the individual wav files into iTunes by selecting them off my hard drive - rather than asking iTunes to capture a whole burned disc of the same tracks - I was using individual wav files because my understanding was that they would give better quality in conversion AAC (Meg4) than would capturing from an audio disc previously created off of Roxio - because in the Roxio conversion to audio disc from wav file some detail would be lost.   Again the workaround would be to create a playlist whenever iTunes takes in the wav->mpeg4 tracks in the wrong order.... but I was concerned with getting an unmanageable number of playlists.

The solution I am going with it to forget about the lost of detail - this is not classical music I am dealing with - and I will burn the audio disc off Roxio and then tell iTunes to capture off the audio disc.

Now if I could only figure out how to plug in the title/artist tags and have them stay there through the 2 conversions - see separate question on that running simultaneously with this one.

As I have decided on my procedure, I will close this question.

Thanks for the assistance.
