Cannot get Itunes library to show up in ITUNES

I have most of my songs, 10000 or so, on a 500 GB external hard drive. It has always been selected as the Itunes folder location. Recently I've discovered that the main screen of ITUNES only lists 33 songs. I've done a fine on my Apple G4 and the songs appear to be on my external drive. I've rebuilt my library several times (dragged the xml file to the desktop, deleted the library file, imported the xml file), I've also consolidated. The exteral drive is still listed as the location of the itunes music folder.
