How to fix a bad Playlist

I have a Playlist called, simply, Podcasts with one rule: Podcast is True. The reason I have this Playlist is so the podcasts will be visible in my car's iPod listing as the car doesn't show the real Podcast directory.

Anyway, the problem is that there are several items that show in the Playlist as having missing files. That is true as these particular items no longer have the original podcast that put them in the Playlist. I thought I could trick it by having it "find" a different, still present podcast. When I do that, the listing in the Playlist changes to point to the existing file and it plays. When I delete that podcast from the real podcast directory, it does not disappear from the Playlist and again shows the missing file error.

I  also tried deleting the Playlist and creating a new one but as soon as I set that rule, it shows these bad listings. So, there is some vestige of them in the catalog but how do I get rid of it?

Thanks,
Stan

So are the files actually gone and you don't want the podcast listed or did they change in some way (i.e. different file name or different details)?

I will assume the podcast itself (the file) is gone and so you don't need anything in the library.  Do they appear in your main Library?  If so remove them and then remake this smartlist.  It should not have the podcasts in it now.  It should've just been the main library that was causing them to reappear.

Let me know how this works or if you have a question.

Yes, the files are gone and all I want to do is clean up the playlist. The problem is that the entries don't appear in the main library (I presume that means the Music directory) so I cannot delete them there.

Stan,

Do you see a Podcasts library (see image)?  That is actually where I meant to have you look and it should list all your podcasts.  The files themselves may be gone but there could still be an entry there.  The entry should definitely be in some part of the library and that is what we need to find to remove it from your smart list.

Let me know what you find or if you have a question.

Oh, of course. No, it is not in the "real" podcast directory, either. Nor are the files anwhere on my hard drive.
I've attached some screen shots of the bad playlist and the good Podcast directory.

Xema,

That just about did it, with a couple of slight additions. It certainly did clean up all the playlists and even kept the playcounts, which I was concerned about. What surprised me was that the real Podcast directory was empty, though. To fix that, I dragged the Podcast file directory into the Podcast iTunes directory and that restored those. They all showed as unsubscribed so I had to click the subscribe button on each group. With that addition, I now seem to have an error free catalog.

Thanks very much.
