How copy mp3 to iPhone without iTunes?

Here's the situation...

I'm on a road trip.  My PC at home has iTunes on it and it's what I usually sync my iPhone with.

My laptop does not have iTunes on it.  Few questions...

1.  If I install iTunes on my laptop and sync my iPhone will it copy the MP3's from my iPhone to my laptop?  Or will the iPhone be purged of all the MP3's because the laptop has nothing?
2.  I downloaded a MP3 from a website (legit MP3) and want to copy it to my iPhone.  Any way to do this easily without having to download/install iTunes onto my laptop?

Ok, here goes:

1:  If you install iTunes on your laptop, and sync, the iPhone will be cleared of all music and will try to sync the music that the laptop has to it.

Due to Apple trying to keep record companies happy, you can't go grabbing tracks off the iPhone and into iTunes.
*You might find other software that will do that, but iTunes will not*

2:  Reportedly, you can use other methods to copy songs to your iPhone, such as:

RobertNZana - the short answer is NO you cannot do what you want (at least not legally)

1. The iPhone is tethered to a specific copy of iTunes on a specific computer (Mac or Windows).  This is the ONLY computer you can connect the iPhone with for installing applications or copying music.  Anything else you get on the iPhone would be from the iTunes Store online.
Therefore installing iTunes on your laptop WILL NOT help as it will only allow you to see the music already on your iPhone and it will not even allow you to copy it off your iPhone.

2. The link provided by LectricX will only work on hacked iPhones.  There are lots of links out there on how to do it and the pros and cons of the whole process.  The bad news is that hacking the iPhone is also best carried out back on the original computer where the iPhone is linked to iTunes.  Doing so now will also result in the likely loss of all the music on the iPhone and with no means to restore the music ...  :-(

The only real way to get music on to the iPhone without iTunes connected is to use the ITunes app on the phone to download the music directly to the iPhone..

You can then plug the phone into the iTunes and right click on the phone and choose "Transfer purchases".

Basically though apple have you. You need to by the music / apps / ringtones from them..>! ;)

it is possible to do it without ITunes if you want to take the time and trouble of "Jailbreaking" your iphone
its a fairly complex procedure involving first jailbreaking the phone, installing ssh software on the phone, installing an FTP client on your computer and then locating on the phone where to place the MP3...a lot of trouble for 1 MP3 :P
