iphone sync won't copy all photos onto iphone

Hi,

I'm using a Mac with OS-X (10.5.8) and iTunes (8.2.1(6)) and an iPhone (original (2G) phone running version 3 of the OS).

When I sync the phone, it says I have (roughly) 120MB free.

I have a selection of folders of photos to sync to the phone.  iTunes will only copy SOME of these and fail saying that there is insufficient space on the phone.

The total of all the photos is around 250MB, the iPod photo cache folder is about 775MB.

There is around 200MB of photos on the phone so more than enough space for the photos, and not quite sure why the photo cache folder is so large.

I've tried deleting all the photos from the phone, syncing different folders, deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder etc... and always end up back at the same spot.

Any ideas?

Look if you have 120MB free on your iphone you can only have as much photos to fill the 120MB.
Try deleting all of your photos, see how much space your iphone has, collect some photos, make sure they aren't exceeding the space on the iphone.

Hi - I've tried this before.  The amount of photos I'm trying to copy is less than the space with no photos on the phone - copying the photos should leave around 50MB of space on the phone.

I've also tried deleting apps, videos and music to varying degrees of success

So like if you copy 5 images, some times it will fail on the second image, sometime on the first...?

It never fails on the first image. It will
always copy SOME.

If (for example) I have 1000 images sometimes it will
copy 781 or 832 or 925. The next sync may end up with more or less photos on the phone even if there are no other changes between syncs. The number copies on the next sync may be one or two more or less or may be a hundred or so more or less

So, you delete everything and send in 1000 images, for example 781 images gets copyed only.
Then you delete everything again, send in 1000 images and this time a different amount of images gets transfered?

I'll double check tonight to confirm 100%, but I believe this is the behaviour - yes - it's very weird!!  Particularly as there's still more than enough free space.  In the past this all worked fine!

The best thing to do would be to reformat your iphone, and reinstall it.

OK. I've done a restore and upgrade to 3.0.1 and still got the same issue. Any more thoughts?

Try using your iPhone on another machine, maybe the fault is in your system either then in the phone itself. If you get the same issue on another machine try this: when you get error that there isn't enough space left. See the properties of your phone for how much space is left. If you see that there's a lot of MB left then there's really nothing you can do about it remotely. Contact technician. Because this is the first ever such error.

Hi,

Thanks for trying to fix it, but to no avail...

The phone (currently) says 138MB free, iTunes says 141.6MB - so a slight difference there.

Not able to sync on another computer without a lot of fiddling to get it all set up.

I know I'm not the only one as I googled this a few weeks ago and saw others with the same issue, but no resolution (e.g. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2046425&tstart=0)

Well, got all the photos on, but in a weird way....

Basically the iPhone/iTunes reports the wrong amount of free space - certainly on the first gen iPhone.

The phone reported 120MB free - I deleted a 200MB video, it then reported 150MB free and synced a few more photos, but still said not enough space.  Deleted another 200MB video, re-synced and the same thing (more photos still about 150MB free) - then removed a large 100MB app, and all the photos got on there!  So basically I removed 0.5GB of stuff and the amount of free space hardly changed!

Weird!

Thanks for all the ideas though.... Looks like a space reporting bug to me
