Browse All TopicsAt some point in the life of my laptop (Vista 64), I started to run out of disk space and decided to move my itunes music library to an external, portable hard drive. That solution worked fine until recently when I had to reinstall my OS together with all of my programs (e.g., MS Office, iTunes, etc., etc.). Since that time, iTunes thinks that my music library is on my c: drive in its default liocation and not on my external hard drive. I have edited my preferences to tell iTunes that the library is on the external drive but that doesnt do any good.
Do I have to move the entire library back to the default location and then "consolidate" it back to my external drive to get iTunes to understand where it is?
Is there an easier way?
I am running iTunes 9

iTunes will not auto-pickup the files that live at the new library location that you specified.
With the library location preference set to be your external drive, re-import your songs into the library by either dragging the songs onto the iTunes window or from the menu File->Library->Add to library command.
You should also uncheck the preference of "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" which can be found in Preferences->Advanced to avoid duplicating your library.
