Question

iTunes 9.0 erroneously asks me to reauthorize Audible.com account everytime I open iTunes.

Asked by: plurye

Every time I open iTunes, I have to reenter my login and password to authorize my Audible audiobooks.  That's not such a problem if I want to play the audiobooks through iTunes on my computer (though I know  it's not "right") BUT here's the problem.  I have my iPhone set to automatically sync when I attach it to my computer and, when I do -- every day for backup purposes -- if iTunes was not already open and the Audible files reauthorized, I get the following message:

"Some of the Audible files in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPhone because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."  If I click OK (my only choice), my Audible files are removed from my iPhone.   Then they need to be restored by authorizing Audible, and then resyncing.

Note:  if I remember to open iTunes and reauthorize the Audible files before I plug in my iPhone, no problem.  However, it's surely a bug that I should have to reauthorize every time I open iTunes.

BTW, I'm on a computer where I am the admin and am signed in as such, so it's not a problem of authorizing without administrator privileges.  And I don't have any other non-Audible authorization problems with the other family computers with which I share iTunes files and iPod apps.

FYI, I have a new iMac (21.5" 3.06 GHz) and this problem has only occurred since I moved my files to this computer from my old G5 (using Time Machine).

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I have seen online, there are a few things you can try:

1. When authorizing the account, try doing so with the original Administrator account (versus your account which has admin privileges.)
2. A few people noted that making the iTunes directory world-readable (chown -R o+w /path/to/itunes) prior to reauthorization of the account resolved the problem.

Thanks - some follow-ups:

1. The Administrator account I used is the one listed as "My Account" in the Accounts System Preference pane - does that mean it's necessarily the "original Adminstrator account" you mentioned in your email?

2. Need a little more instruction re your second comment (I'm not THAT much of an expert!)  This looks like something I'd need to do in Terminal - can you instruct?

Thanks for your help.

1. You should be able to see which accounts exist in: system preferences > users (or something like that). There should be an account actually called 'administrator'.

2. Given your lack of familiarity with the terminal, I can give you a broad overview of what you'll need to do:

Objectives:
1. Open terminal (search for "term", it should pop up in the list)
2. Know the path to your iTunes directory (/home/user/music/iTunes, or whatever it may be).
3. Navigate to the folder that contains the iTunes directory
4. Issue the chown command, targeting the directory.

Once you have terminal open, you can use the following commands:
ls - this will show you a listing of the contents of the folder you are currently in.
cd [path/to/target]- this will allow you to change directories
cd .. - (yes, including the two dots), this will take you back one directory.

An example run:
We'll assume your iTunes directory is located in /home/plurye/music/
1. Open terminal
2. Issue the command: cd /home/plurye/music
3. Issue the command: chown -R o+w iTunes

I'm actually Peter's wife (Eileen Kleiman) and I'm the one having the problem.  I got into the directory and tried the chown command.  Got an error ( chown: o+w: Invalid argument) then tried again after going into the itunes directory and got the same error message.  Here's a copy of my dialog:

eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:music eileenkleiman$ chown -R o+w :itunes
chown: o+w: Invalid argument
eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:music eileenkleiman$ cd /itunes/
-bash: cd: /itunes/: No such file or directory
eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:music eileenkleiman$ cd /users/eileenkleiman/music/itunes
eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:itunes eileenkleiman$ chown -R o+w
usage: chown [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] owner[:group] file ...
       chown [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] :group file ...
eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:itunes eileenkleiman$ chown -R o+w itunes
chown: o+w: Invalid argument
eileen-kleimans-imac-g5-5:itunes eileenkleiman$

Any suggestions?  (Perhaps there's a slight error in my transcription of the command.)  Thanks!

Oops, I'm sorry about that. The command you want is chmod, not chown.

So, from a directory where you can see iTunes when using ls, type: chmod -R o+w iTunes

if you get errors referring to lack of permission, try: sudo chmod -R o+w iTunes (you'll be rompted for you pword)

by: pluryePosted on 2009-11-07 at 15:13:00ID: 25768536

Ok, when I went to the music directory, I typed chmod -R o+w iTunes and got no error.  However, when I opened iTunes I was still asked to authorize Audible.

When I tried the sudo chmod... command, I got a scary warning about deletion of system files, so I couldn't bring myself to try; I'm just not knowledgeable enough to recover from that.

Thanks anyway.  Any other ideas?

I would try using the original admin account. Other than that, I'm out of ideas

The solution was simply to download iTunes again and reinstall it.  That fixed the problem.  Sorry for the delay in posting this!
