transferring music from iPod to iTunes

I busted the screen on my full sized iPod (all the music is intact, just the screen is shot), so bought a new Shuffle. Also, I never had enough storage space on my old computer to store my library of songs, so always just deleted them after I had transfered them to my iPod. Frustrated with lack of storage and performance on the old computer, I also just bought a new computer.

So, I would like to get my music from the old iPod into the library of my new computer, and ultimately, unto the new Shuffle. Apparently, this is no small feat. All the music is from my CD collection (no downloads), and I really don't want to go through converting everything again. I have already tried a few suggestions I found online, and nothing seems to work. I don't want to pay for some add-on software when it seems like this is a feature iTunes should provide.
