Yes. the iphone connects with imap, so the imap service has to be configured. you also have to open port 993 to the exchange server (for secure imap).

i've turned on the IMAP service and have it set to automatic.  are you saying open up port 993 on firewall to forward IMAP to exchange server?  secondly.  is there anything else to be configured on IMAP.  so for example.  on the iphone..i would use   imap.company.com  or is there something else like the owa address that i would need?  and they would authenticate using domain credentials?

yes, the iphone needs to be able to connect to 993 on the exchange server, thus this would need to opened on the firewall. nothing else should need to be configured for imap. on the iphone, you would use whatever you have configured in dns to connect to your exchange server externally. this is basic dns, so yes, the owa url should work fine. and yes, you would need to put domain credentials in the appropriate box in the iphone.

on my sonic wall, i have created a firewall rule from WAN to LAN for IMAP, i am going to assume 993 is the default port.. i don't have to do anything with IIS?

by: kristinawPosted on 2007-09-21 at 11:24:55ID: 19937870

no. the exchange server should already be listening on it if you turned on the imap service. you can test (internally on the lan first) by telnet exchangenameorip 993

yeah i tried testing that way to begin with, i can telnet exchange 143 and get an ok that imap is started, but i can't enter any commands, if i use 993 i get nothing, it just goes black

by: kristinawPosted on 2007-09-21 at 13:51:02ID: 19939097

right, it just goes black and you get a blinking cursor. that's what its supposed to do.

well, i installed Exchange rollup3 update to exchange server, and still won't connect.  it tells me it can't connect using SSL and asks me if i want to try without SSL i say yes, then it says authentication fails.  Anything else I can try?

When specifying the username make sure you type in the following format:
DOMAIN/USERNAME (note that the / goes / way and not \ as it would with pop, or with outlook).

Hi

I have just got my iPhone working perfectly on Exchange 2007 using active Sync....
It seems to only work thro the GPRS network, and not thro a wireless network...

Try setting up as per the wizard screen on it for Exchange, ensuring that your ssl cert completely valid for OWA, and that it is Safari compatible (easy way to tell is to browse to your owa portal on the iphone, if you can login then all is ok)

there is no trickery at all, it is just the fact that for some reason mail does not work on wireless (wifi, not gprs)

I have found out because I was nearly at the end of my tether, and tried mobileme, which only works on the GPRS... I actually think that it has something to do with the Iphone not really carrying out proper name resolution on wireless (I know for a fact that it will only ever use the primary dns server, and ignores the secondary, and is grumpy if the dns server is win2003 box....)

hope that helpes...

Now a VERY happy iPhone owner :)

an update!!

It now works on wireless too...

It does work really, really well. :-)

It seems that you can not attach the first time on wifi (and was using a wifi network both on, and off domain) and that in order to import / use the cert (I assume) you need to go thro the 3G network....

When an iphone is using it's internet connection it's 'outside' your network and resolves the name accordingly, but if you are in the office or network that houses your exchange server and you connect via wi-fi.. if that network isn't setup to properly route the DNS name to the local server.. you won't connect.. a firewall generally won't let you go out and back in again if you request an internet IP from a local network that points back to that network.
