Question

IMAP and iPhone

Asked by: ITcrowd

Hi

I have Exchange 2003.  I have configured my firewall to allow port143.  IMAP4 is enabled on the Exchange Server.

I have an iPhone and i have successfully configured it to where i can retrieve my inbox and ll the folders that comes with it.  The problem i have is sending mail.  On the iphone settings where it says "outgoing mail server (SMTP), Im not sure what to put.  I tried several ways  mail.mydomain.com, smtp.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com/exchange and owa.mydomain.com.  On the username, I tried mydomain/user and user@mydomain.com and the password.

Any idea what step Im missing to be able to send email through imap on the iphone?

This is my configures that works on IPhone.

I assumed that the IMAP is enabled on your Exchange Server

Inbound: mail.domain.com
Use SSL: (On)
Authentication: NTLM
IMAP path prefix: (none)
Server port: 993 (should be the default)

Outgoing (SMTP): mail.domain.com:25
Use SSL: (On)
Authentication: NTLM
Server port: 25 (default also)

Username/password authentication for both inbound and outbound. Pretty simple.

hi davidkklim:.  I tried these settings.  It still won't work.

Yes IMAP is enabled on the exchange.

On the iPhone when you add an account, you have three options for "other" which is IMAP, POP or Exchange.  I tried the settings you gave me on both IMAP and EXCHANGE.  It still won't work.  Also  I could only get Incoming mail only if i turn off SSL.  I'm not sure if that's a good thing.  Any thoughts?

here you go, the SSL might be the cause.
do you exchange have SSL enabled with a valid cert?
you might want to check if you Iphone have updated CA root.

I believe my Exchange Server is SSL enabled with a valid cert because OWA and RTC over HTTP works fine..  How do I check the iPhone if it has an updated CA root?

by: davidkklimPosted on 2007-11-08 at 17:32:42ID: 20247065

I would suggest you to start with turn off SSL on your IPhone, and once you get everything going then you can proceed second level troubleshooting such as SSL cerf diagnostic on your Iphone or between Iphone and Exchange server.

so please let's start with something that is working by turn off the SSL on your Iphone.

let me know.

Thanks

To READ email,  it works if SSL is off on the iPhone whether Im inside or outside the network.

TO SEND  email, it also works with SSL OFF BUT ONLY inside our network (via wireless) but once i go out of the office and use Edge, I could no longer send.

firewall issue?

by: davidkklimPosted on 2007-11-08 at 17:49:01ID: 20247124

ok, that ring a bell.
firewall for SMTP and IMAP ports need to be configured.
you might want to check with your Exchange Admin, and get this solve out.

you are getting closer.. :)
let me know.

I already have port 143 and 857 opened on the firewall that translates to the internal IP of the exchange.  Still wont work.

by: davidkklimPosted on 2007-11-09 at 22:40:22ID: 20254835

Exchange IMAP4, name imaps is protocol over TLS/SSL, so you should make sure port 993 is enabled in your exchange server AND firewall (inbound and outbound)

by: davidkklimPosted on 2007-11-09 at 22:42:32ID: 20254837

btw, i'm curious why you are using port 143 and 857 for your IMAP setup?

by: ITcrowdPosted on 2007-11-10 at 00:16:04ID: 20254963

Im sorry it's port 587.  From what i understand, I need port 143 open to do IMAP, because when it was closed on the firewall, I couldn't get anything at all from the Exchange.  But when I opened it, it started working (Retrieving email from outside that is).  I just opened 587 because that was the default port that the iphone was giving me so I figured I needed to open port 587.  I will try opening port 993 on the Firewall and going to the Exchange Manager - First Storage Group - Servers -Exchange Server - Protocol - SMTP - Default  SMTP  Virtual Server - Properties -General Tab - Advance and change All Assigned to 993 instead of port 25?

Does that mean I have to change the port on the advance settings on the Outgoing of the iPhone to  993 as well?

Thanks David for your effort.

IT Crowd,

Seem like your problem is out of this topic now, you might want to file a seperate question for your IMAP4 configure on your exchange.

Meanwhile, you might want to make up your mind which protocol for which port.
For example:
IMAP4 TCP 143 and SSL port 993
SMTP TCP 25
SMTP TLS AUTH TCP 587

Like I mention the solution for your first queston above, the following configures that works on IPhone:
I assumed that the IMAP and SSL is enabled  on your Exchange Server

Inbound: mail.domain.com
Use SSL: (On)
Authentication: NTLM
IMAP path prefix: (none)
Server port: 993 (should be the default)

Outgoing (SMTP): mail.domain.com:25
Use SSL: (On)
Authentication: NTLM
Server port: 25 (default also)

Username/password authentication for both inbound and outbound. Pretty simple.

Check the Exchange server and make sure the ssl cert is installed for the Imap and the smtp connectors as well. It is not by default, but it is on your OWA.
