Question

How to configure Exchange 2003 for ActiveSync with Iphone 3g

Asked by: Dalton1981

Hello experts,

I have read through numerous similar posts on here but their solutions didn't work for me.
I have a stand-alone Server 2003 Standard (sp3) - Exchange 2003 server (SP2). I use OWA so port 443 is already open for business. I recently purchased a cert from GoDaddy and installed it as "webmail.domain.com" Which our MX records point directly to our external IP. Our Firewall's NAT routes traffic on port 443 to the correct server (since OWA is up and running). I installed the cert on the iPhone (via gmail). The user account in AD has OWA, OMA etc all enabled. IMAP4 is disabled, though i've read its not needed since ActiveSync is utilized in 3G.

When i enter the exchange account in the iphone, it is initially "unable to verify certificate" - domain.com. (Only webmail.domain.com is covered by the Cert.) After i hit accept, it lets me manually enter the "server", Once i do that - it says, "Exchange account verified" and progresses to the "select info to sync using exchange".  When i go into Mail and click on the newly created email account, and click on inbox, It just says, "Updated [date/time]". It does not bring down my folder structure, it only displays inbox.

Here are the logs:
2008-07-30 13:30:18 W3SVC1 192.168.0.7 PROPFIND /exchange/dgudex@DOMAIN.com/NON_IPM_SUBTREE/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync/iPhone/Appl87830GXXXXX - 80 - 192.168.0.7 Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync/6.5.7638.1 401 2 5
2008-07-30 13:30:18 W3SVC1 192.168.0.7 POST /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync User=dgudex&DeviceId=Appl87830XXXXX&DeviceType=iPhone&Cmd=FolderSync&Log=V4TNASNC:0A0C0D0FS:0A0C0D0SP:1C1I477S600R0S0L0H0P 443 DOMAIN\dgudex 32.165.xxx.xx Apple-iPhone/501.347 500 0 0

So the iphone is hitting the server, its verified the exchange settings, the cert (Profile) in the iPhone is correct and working. Its just not sync'ing.

I've read in post [http://www.experts-exchange.com/Apple/Hardware/iPhone/Q_23572239.html] that re-installing the exchange server's SP2 was the solution. I'm not sure if that's the correct step to take in my situation.

Thanks for your post, very well worded, and I have exact same situation. On the phone with Apple they say an SSL cert is not required, but the enterprise guide says it is. In any case, this exch server does not have SSL and so it is disabled on the iPhone exchange account setup as well.  Everything verifies, Certificate is manually accepted, but no data ever syncs.

Am looking forward to a solution and will watch the thread closely. Thanks.

I've called apple support as well. I wanted to make sure that you don't need to buy that "exchange enterprise" feature AT&T asked when you sign up. They assured me its not needed. Is that MobileME? or a separate feature? the apple tech didn't know much about it, other than it wasn't required.

What if the exchange server setup is not using ISA though?

by: Dalton1981Posted on 2008-08-01 at 10:09:30ID: 22140132

I noticed ISA is on the check list of the PDF (linked above) as well. I uninstalled that a while ago as i had no need for it. It seems like its essential for the process. I do not see ISA available when you do "Add windows components" under Add/Remove programs, nor is it Available via Windows Updates or on download.microsoft.com. You can only download 2006 trial version, or the SP's for ISA 2004 & 2006. I'm going to check the original installation CDs.

Is ISA 100% necessary for this?

by: Dalton1981Posted on 2008-08-01 at 15:06:18ID: 22142279

I went through all of my install CD's. I used to have a Small Business Server 2003 which came with ISA. I uninstalled it on that box. I have 6 server 2003 standard servers now.. Does ISA even come with Server 2003 standard? Microsoft doesn't sell ISA 2004 anymore and ISA 2006 is 1500-2k.
I don't want to spend 2k to fix this.... Any suggestions?

Update: I have ISA2004 and will install it and continue to troubleshoot. I will keep you all posted.

Just wondering if you were able to fix this issue.  I am having a similar issue, but only with a few users.  The rest of the users work just fine.

The ones with the problems get the Account Verified, but when you go to the Mail, it starts to sync for a second and then reports back "Updated".

Thanks.

no luck on my side yet - I'm waiting to here if the ISA is required, and whether that could be the issue.

by: Dalton1981Posted on 2008-08-14 at 11:38:30ID: 22232963

I haven't had time to implement ISA 2004. Monkey, going from Apples "how to configure 3G with exchange using active sync guide". I get the overwhelming impression that ISA04 is required.

This was resolved months ago, i have slacked on posting the solution. A friend fixed this for me as i gave up. He had to rebuild the OMA site in IIS with default permissions as it was never configured. Once that was rebuilt, he set it up to forward over to OWA. Once this was done, it worked. Wish i could be more specific - i wasn't there at the time of the fix.

If a sr expert could interpret my comment into something that would help others, id award you the points

Thanks for the post - I'm mostly Mac-based, so the details of the Exchange config elude me. It's interesting though that most of the people I've come across who need iPhone to work with Exchange tend to ask Apple people, but it's entirely an Exchange configuration, but there's no explicit best practices documentation that I've seen.

I fixed this myself. this was the most helpful reply though
