Hi,
I have found solution to my problem. FYI, iPhone 3G does support Exchange 2003 SP2.
Thanks.

Browse All TopicsHi,
Having problem setting up new iPhone 3G to Exchange 2003 SP2.
Exchange version: 2003 SP2
Active Sync: enabled
OWA address: https://domainname/exchang
OMA address: https://domainname/oma - working from inside and outside the netwrok
Firewall - ISA 2004
We are using VeriSign issued certificate for our domain name. Username is entered in form 'domain\username' and password. Then I receive a message saying 'Unable to verify certificate' and I touch accept. Then it asks me to enter exchange account information with 'Server' option.
After entering 'server' name, I touch next and it comes up with error 'Exchange account verification failed'. I have tried entering different URLs in 'Server' option but did not help.
e.g. www.domainname.com, www.domainname.com/exchang
Also tried turning off SSL but can't see any emails in the Inbox. I also installed the certificate on iPhone but can't see it under setting --> General --> Profiles and when I try to reinstall it it says the phone already has it.
I doubt if iPhone can't contact the exchange server and hence can't authenticate. Is it ISA 2004 blocking the connection? We are using SSL for SharePoint and email access from outside network so port 443 is open and working.
Any help would be really appriciated.
Thanks.

Hello. I realize you are closing this out, as you figured out the problem, but would you be williing to share the solution? I'm having the same problem. I have SBS 2003 (with Exchange Server 2003 SP-2). I was able to get an older iPhone working with Activesync once the new 2.0 firmware was in. However, I have someone in our small company with the new 3G and I can't seem to get it to work using the same process. I'm getting the "Unagle to verify certificate" but the certificate was loaded in. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello. Looks like the originator of this question is completely done here. I can add, though, that I was able to get the iPhone in question syncing in my case. Since Activesync was set up and the user had mobile user permissions set (as when I succeeded for the other user the first time), it was simply my confusion of internal and external DNS. In other words, since I run SBS/Exchange 2003, when the iPhone asked me for the Server name, I wasn't thinking and put in the internal DNS name of the server. Wrong! Also, not necessary to include the domain in the username. There was a bit of a gap between when I gave information to my boss and he got his older phone working on his own and when this other employee came to me with the 3G model and I had a bit of memory lapse. Anyway, don't know if there is anything else happening in your case. At the risk of stating stuff you already figured out I can at least summarize what ultimately worked for me regarding the iPhone settings...
- First, mailed the SSL certificate to the user as an attachment via a Gmail account he had working on the phone. When the iPhone saw the attachment it knew it was a certificate and asked him to install, which he did.
- Second, the iPhone settings...
Selected 'Exchange' account
Email: username@yourcompany.com (the user's external, primary SMTP email address)
Username: xxxx (user's network/domain login username only - do NOT precede with ' YOURDOMAIN\ ', even though iPhone may prompt you to)
Password: (his/her network password)
Server: mail.yourcompany.com (external address of Exchange server from MX record in DNS)
SSL: Leave ON
I'm not sure whether actually adding the certificate was a factor or not. I saw discussion of it elsewhere in other forums and it seemed a logical step to take. But clearly I had initially entered the server name incorrectly, which would explain why I got the "unable to verify certificate" message, as the entry did not match the address coded into the certificate. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Got it.
I installed the SSL Provider root certificate in the IPhone / Itouch.
Mailled them to my Web mail. open each one and installed them. (3 in total. The Root chain, the A chain and the site certificate.)
Then went throught the exechange setup in the Iphone / Itouch and voilà.
Donne deal.
tlgtech: you have the solution.
I had the same problem. The problem was Forms authentication and using 128 bit encryption.
ESM - In the Exchange Virtual server go to properties and disable forms authentication.
In IIS go to the default web site/ Exchange / Properties / Directory Security / Edit /
un-check Require SSL and un-check Require 128 Bit Encryption.
If either one or both of these are checked the Iphone will not connect OWA. I was doing some tweaking on our Exchange Server and discovered the problem. Confirmed the issue on my own Exchange server at home.
Iphone is totally works with Exchange 2003, but how well is the debate.
I had this problem with all the correct information. Oddly enough I had to backup all my email to a .pst file, delete them all from my mailbox, then copy them back in. Once I did that they all showed up on the iphone. Also the calendar worked for me but another person I had to do the same thing to their calendar. Didn't see any problems with contacts on either one.
Just setup an iPhone 3GS to work with Small Business Server 2003 Premium. I already have a number of Windows smartphones working so I figured my difficulty was on the Exchange configuration on the iPhone. I am using Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and have installed a self created certificate.
Here's how I setup my iPhone (after a few failed attempts):
Email: user@companydomain.com
Serv
Domain: (Left blank)
User name: user
Password: user password
SSL: On
I hope this helps someone. I found so much conflicting information out there. Good luck.

Server 2003 is not supported. You need Server 2007 for it to work as advertised.
You can set up IMAP mail, but it won't push anything to the iPhone, just normal fetch.
