Can the iPhone synchronize my tasks, calendar, contacts and notes with Outlook without using Exchange

I have always used smartphones like the ppc6700 and the Palm Centro. I can easily syncronize the device with all my Outlook info via activesync or Palm Hotsync.

I am interested in the iPhone but cannot get anyone at the Apple store or ATT to tell me if this is possible. I have NO EXCHANGE SERVER. I simply plug my current phone into a cable (or bluetooth) and sync to my local system. Very Simple.

Can the iPhone do this? Is there an Outlook app for iPhone? or do you use something else for that? Does it do this through iTunes?

I need a thorough explanation of the functionality of the iPhone in terms of syncing with Outlook on a PC without an Exchange server. Feel free to include other functionality around this that I may be interested in. Much Appreciated!
