Hi, Eoin. I found a file on my computer that is called iPhone backup extractor.app.zip and has 607 KB. I was just thinking... in the meantime, I got another iPhone (3G)... Could I try to sync that new iPhone with this file, so as not to risk doing anything to my old iPhone where all the photos were? Could the photos possibly be in this file? Thanks. -- Leor
The file iPhone backup extractor.app.zip - is something you downloaded from here - http://supercrazyawesome.c
It is a program that allows you to extract data from iPhone backups - it works on OSX only.
If you open the ZIP and run the APP file it will look for the iPhone backup files which are located here on OSX
/Users/yourusername/Librar
If you are on Windows you can look for backups here
C:\Documents and Settings\ yourusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
You might want to speed things up and just get a small application called CopyTrans

.. or specifically CopyTransPhoto

See this article for a review of the various tools

OK, Eoin, so you are fairly confident that the photos are in my backup file in my computer. My iPhone tells me to connect to iTunes and shows the yellow triangle with exclamation mark in it. I'm reluctant to connect to iTunes because I'm afraid that if in fact the only place the photos exist are in the iPhone, I might lose them by connecting to iTunes. I'd like to proceed in the most cautious way possible. I have 1500+ family photos that I don't have anywhere else, unless indeed, as you say, they are in that backup file. So, I think I could maybe make a copy of the backup file onto a CD, and then open that file, and I wonder if the photos would appear on my computer? Thanks again. -- Leor

This is a great little tool that allows you to explore the contents of your iPhone backups to recover data
