Question

Using iPhone 3G with Exchange

Asked by: m3housing

I am having trouble connecting an iPhone 3G to Microsoft Exchange.

Whatever settings I try and use I get the following message when i go to view my inbox:

"Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server failed."

I thought the options should be in following format:
Email = username@domain.co.uk
Server = remote.domain.co.uk (this is a DNS forwarder to our router which passes through to the Exchange server)
Domain = DOMAINNAME
Username = username used for domain
password = domain password
SSL = on

I can successfully browse to both https://remote.domain.co.uk/exchange and https://remote.domain.co.uk/oma on the iPhone using Safari and login using the same credentials i am trying to use with Mail settings.

I have a 3rd party SSL certificate installed for remote.domain.co.uk used above.

I am using Windows SBS 2003 with Exchange SP2, simple set-up with server behind router/firewall.  I believe all relevant ports are open and pointing to server IP eg. 443, 25, 143, 993.

Any help appreciated!

Try entering the username using domain\username format

Email = username@domain.co.uk
Server = remote.domain.co.uk (this is a DNS forwarder to our router which passes through to the Exchange server)
Domain = DOMAINNAME
Username = domain\username (You need the domain name before your username)
password = domain password
SSL = on

This worked for me, finally after days of it not working, finally figured out how to make the iphone and SBS Exchange 2003 talk to each other.

1. Make sure your exchange server is upgraded to SP2

2. Run Connect to the Internet wizard under the server manager > internet and email, don't change anything in the wizard, everything will be there by default if you'd already setup the exchange server. Just make sure that OMA, OWA, Remote Web, Outlook via Email boxes are all checked > follow the prompts on the wizard until you get to finish and finish the wizard

3. Run Synchronize Email Tool to sychronize email with the internet

4. On the Iphone > delete all previous settings for exchange setup

5. Restart your iphone

6. Now setup your iphone with the your exchange settings

7. If you get the certificate error, ignore it

(also if you have contacts on your iphone currently, make sure you back them up first, the sync will wipe out any contacts that you have on the iphone but not on outlook)
