Activesync on Iphone not working

Hi!
I have been searching the net the last week and have gotten alot of help but now its about time to write my own Question..

This is the situation: We got a Small Business Server 2003 R1 with Exchange SP2 where we intend to use Activesync. we also have two iPhones (2.0) on which we want to use the Activesync feature.
After alot of work and testing i got activesync to work on a PocketPc emulator on my computer. It downloads emails and contacts etc.
When i type in the same settings in the iPhone they do not download anything, but there is generally no errors also. Not on the server application log and not on the iPhone. It says its synchronized, but nothing goes in our out.

I have spent alot of time checking permissions and security on all virtual websites in IIS according to Microsoft's "recipies" and other tips and it got me this far. Before i had alot of other troubles which is now dealt with.

I can give you more information, but please tell me what you want.

Basically i get no errors or messages on the iPhone when synchronizing and nothing turns up in Activesync MobileAdmin Tool. It did register the PocketPc, just not the iPhones.

Can you push me in the right direction?

Kind Regards
Espen (Norway)

How are you iPhones connected to the server.

Are they using WiFi on your network or are they using the cellular network?

Can you access you companies remote web workplace site from the iPhone?
The settings you have used on your PC will work internally but not externally. You need to be targeting you mail servers external IP address for this to work or its external FQDN. Try that and see where it gets you.

NeilParbrook:
The iPhones has been tried on both 3G and Wifi networks.
I can access OWA on the companynetwork on the iPhones. It does not seem to be any trouble accessing the network, just communicate with the ActiveSync service/module on Exchange/IIS.

plug1:
I tested the PocketPc emulator on my computer from home, so it connected through the external IP. I have not tested anything from internal PC's.

The problem is that this is a production server, and i cant work daytime on it, so ill just do some eveningtests.
I have been thinking about deleting the virtual directories and then recreate them as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380

Do you think it could be worth a try? I mean, since there are no errormessages telling me what can be wrong, it is difficult to search for the problem.

OK mate are you using SSL on the server or not? I would disable SSL protection on the server and try to connect, if it works then you have a certificate problem (which is very common).

SSL is enabled on the Default Website, but not on any of the directories in mention. SSL is not set to be required on any directories. SSL has been more enforced previously before ActiveSync came into consideration, so there might be something hanging on since that?
This link describes that i could run the Configure E-Mail and Internet Connection Wizard to reset the directories to default state: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 (please look under Cause regarding SBS server).
Thats right, rerun the Wizard and select what you need (not SSL) and all should be well. SBS will set the directories to the correct state.

Hi again.
I have now tested different things.
I ran the Internet and email wizard.
As far as i could se the IIS virtual directories didnt change too much, so i deleted and recreated the virtual directories as described here: http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/tip/0,,sid43_gci1240016,00.html

So far no changes regarding Activesync and iPhone. I DO get PocketPc emulator and a HTC phone up on Activesync on the same account as i have tried the iPhone with. Always using external FQDN and without SSL.

It isnt good policy to go to the customer and say the server is working, but we cant get your phone up using the Exchange email functionality (which the salesman clearly stated was just a few clicks away, which should be the truth?), so what do i do?
This clearly must be some Exchange/iPhone compatibility issue or something like that?

Thanks for all responses this far.

Espen
heres a quick link.. From what Ive read I think the Iphone may only work over SSL even though it has the option to turn it off Im not sure that it works.

Thanks plug1.
As far as i have read one should not use SSL when trying to get Activesync to work, so i have not thought about it yet.
They only got a selfsigned certificate. Will this be enough, or do i need a 3rd party certificate?
SSL is enabled on the Default Website, but not enforced. And i should not enforce SSL either on any of the virtual directories concerning Activesync right?
What settings should i use to enable SSL? Wouldnt it be enough to enable SSL on the microsoft-server-activesync and leave all settings alone?

Espen
Im afraid a self signed cert wont do bud, you'll need to purchase a proper one. I use GoDaddy for ours. Once you have the cert inplace then run the internet connection wizard again to configure it for SSL.

Do you have any idea of what of the different products i would need from godaddy? Basically Standard would be enough i think, but it doesnt verify the company's identity. Is this important.? Wouldnt want to buy something that is not doing the job :)

Espen
We use the "Standard Multiple Domain (UCC) SSL" for our exchange 2007 server, you need it to support your internal and extarnal domain names, remember that when setting it up.

I see. They got "mydomain.local" internally and "webmail.mydomain.no" as external FQDN.
I then need to enter both these names in the SSL request procedure? Im not 100% familiar with that, but ill find out.
Will come back to you with the result. Just need to sell them the expence..

Espen
Thats it, you dont need it for the iphone or activesync but it stops certificates errors for internal webmail users.
