Hi,

iPhone is lacking the necessarry procol called "DUN" or "Dial Up Networking" which provides internet modem support.

Just right click on the iPhone icon and display properties. You will see that Dial-up Networking is not among the supported protocols.

So the answer is no you can't.

Cheers,
K.

This is a screen shot of the details.

Correct, I don't see the Dial-Up Networking, but what does this have to do with "internet modem support" and/or just recognizing the device?

I tried this at home and it connected with my home laptop just fine.  I was able to use my laptop as a speaker and microphone for the phone, so it must work somehow, but it's not working with my work laptop for some reason.

Any other ideas?

Bluetooth has several profiles to accomplish tasks. Bluetooth has deliberately crippled by Apple not to provide all vailable services for obvious reasons. So currently all you can use with Bluetooth is to sync your phone to our computer.

Cheers,
K.

Sync what exactly?  Like I mentioned before, my home laptop was able to use the speaker and microphone...

What are these profiles you are referring to?  What bluetooth features can my laptop and iPhone use together?

Thanks

Only these listed on the Bluetooth profiles and currently you only synchronize data between your computer and iPhone this is it. Sorry. This is the problem with the implementation of Bluetooth in iPhone this is why I'll never buy one : )

Cheers,
K.

Not sure if this is the entire picture as it works on some computers but not others.

This is definitely it. Check these discussons here:

http://www.computing.net/answers/phones/iphone-and-bluetooth/786.html

In fact it should be enough that you don't see " dial-up networking" protocol among supported  protocols.

the only iPhonhe that supports cnnection ie the Latest 3GS

K.

Has this obvious oversight been fixed with the iPhone 4, or is it still not possible to connect and transfer data with a PC via Bluetooth?

by: HaimDPosted on 2010-09-01 at 11:56:54ID: 33580145

Just checked my iPhone 4 and it's still not possible.

Thanks HaimD,

I know I was just trying, but ran into similiar problems you did.  Just thought I'd check if I was missing anything, and update this post for those who are iPhone 4 users, not just 3GS.

True and thanks.  These kind of follow-ups are good.  :)
