The problem is that my iphone and gmail are BOTH sync'd with the dups. Over 1000 contacts. I'm looking for a more automated way to get rid of dups on either end. Then I can sync.

How can I automatically or easily delete the duplicates? (I know how to do it manually and I know about the 'merge' in gmail but I want a simpler solution.)

Well if you have all the contacts in gmail. You could delete all your contacts on your iphone and sync again, which should result in your phone only having your gmail contacts.
