Question

POP mail account only showing the Inbox

Asked by: WineGeek

This is on a friend's iPhone 3G with 3.0 software.

There are 2 POP mail accounts:

Yahoo: This POP account is fine.
Comcast: This is the POP account that is only showing the Inbox but it used to show Trash, Sent, etc.

What's up? Anyone know what's causing this? I've reset the iPhone, done a restore, dunked it in a vat of vodka, you know, all the usual things you try. Thanks for any helpful input.

I've deleted and recreated the mail account

You usually see this when the connection is not setup properly. Are you sending and receiving mail?

by: WineGeekPosted on 2009-10-18 at 08:14:22ID: 25600113

Yes, it can send and receive mail. I sent a test email from the Comcast account last night and then the Sent folder showed up but still no other folders are showing under the Comcast mail account.

This has software bug written all over it and I found some discussions online about mail account flakiness with the 3.0 iPhone software. I tried resetting it and everything else imaginable but it's just goofed up.

This seems to be a fairly new or unique problem becuase I'm not seeing much abut it online. I'm hoping someone has already discovered the fix to this...

This is actually a feature of some mail servers. The folders dont appear until you use them and you said thats what happened with the sent folder. Do you see more folders when you login to their webmail?

by: WineGeekPosted on 2009-10-18 at 08:30:13ID: 25600171

Well, the folders used to be there and were there for months, that's the odd thing. They seemed to disappear suddenly and I'm guessing it was after an update but I cannot confirm that yet.

by: psufanPosted on 2009-10-18 at 13:38:37ID: 25601313

Are they still in your webmail? With contents?

by: WineGeekPosted on 2009-10-18 at 18:16:00ID: 25602167

The webmail looks normal with all typical folders present and mail flows perfectly in and out of the Comcast mail account on the iPhone. It's just the missing folders on the iPhone I'm trying to troubleshoot. Thanks.

by: psufanPosted on 2009-10-18 at 18:25:29ID: 25602193

Do the folders have things in them?

by: WineGeekPosted on 2009-10-18 at 18:33:03ID: 25602212

yep, all folders on the webmail portal look normal and healthy and contain what they should contain.

Does comcast offer IMAP? This works better when your checking your mail in multiple places (webmail, and iPhone) because read, reply, forward, delete are synced. And switching to IMAP could fix your folder problem.

by: WineGeekPosted on 2009-10-18 at 20:11:19ID: 25602433

It appears Comcast does not offer IMAP.

by: cusamisPosted on 2009-10-18 at 23:31:35ID: 25602939

The only way that I have found to use the Comcast email folder structures from an iPhone is to use the Comcast iPhone app....

What can I say Comcast is pretty stupid. Maybe you should switch to AOL or gmail if thats a possibility?
