Iphone could not be restored. Error 14.

I have a legitimate never-branded, not jailbreaked iPhone.
I started iTunes 9.0.2.25 and saw there was a new software version for my iPhone (3.1.2 > 3.1.3 I believe). I clicked update and waited. After the download and the process "Installation" was completed iTunes gave me the error (see attachment)
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (14).
When I click OK, the message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode". Then I had the option to restore. I tried that several times. But the same error appears.
Then I updated iTunes to 9.0.3.15 and tried another USB-port. Still the same error.
I am desperate...

It sounds like you may have bricked it.  Faulty USB cable?

Try on a different computer?

I do not see what I may have been doing wrong. It's a company phone, so I wasn't trying to jailbreak it, nor jailbreaked it before. So if it's bricked, it was my laptop, iTunes or whatever...
Installing iTunes on another pc now. By the way, I still have the iPhone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw file.
How old is the phone?  Isn't it still under apple care?  if so, you may want to call them before you further the problem and potentially void your warranty.
The phone is purchased 3 months ago. I tried apple support by expert, but it seems I'm not eligible for any support....
I'd probably call back.  That doesn't sound right.
Could the problem be that I use iTunes 32 bit on a 64 bit (win7) environment? In the 64 bit Program Files folder are only a few files. The iTunes.exe is in the 32 bit Program Files folder.
Have installed iTunes on another laptop and did the same procedure, with the same result....
B.t.w. I'm not a US or Canadian citizen, so that's why I can't call an apple expert for further help. Great...

Try the following:

Start iTunes.
Plug iPhone into USB port.
Turn OFF iPhone.
When iPhone is completely turned off, press and hold both the Home button and the on/off button for approximately 15 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
After you see the Apple logo, the phone will go black.  When this happens, let go of the on/off button but CONTINUE TO PRESS THE HOME BUTTON.   Wait for iTunes to say it sees a phone in Recovery Mode.  Let go of the home button.

Now, try Restore button in iTunes, and see if it will rejoin the land of the living.

What on earth are you talking about?
@akahan: I've tried to to switch off the phone, but each time I press the on/off button (long/short doesn't matter), the image with the usb cable pointing to iTunes shows up (see first image)....

@MrMintanet: this is what I'm talking about (see second image). It seems I'm not only eligible for call back, but also for a call to Apple (I checked my IMEI). Today (it's 7.51 AM here now)  I'll try a local apple store...
