The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Audio record path not found when using a network share

Tags: Apple, Garageband, V 4.1.2. (248.7)
Hi there, I'm fairly new to the Apple world and have recently set up our Midi lab at our school to an Open Directory server and our Windows 2k3 AD server.  I have set our users up with the Apple profile to be located in their network space on the Win2k3 server.  Whenever the users try to add a vocal track using a PreSonus Firebox a dialog box comes up saying "Audio record path not found!" and won't let you record anything.  If you change the location of where you are saving the project from the network space to the local HD then it works fine.  I know this has to be related to how they are connecting to the network, but I don't know where to fix the problem.  I hope I've explained it well enough.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

The issue is likely that PreSonus does not support direct recording to a network path, only local paths.  The reason is speed... you won't get good clean audio recording to a network path.  You can record locally and move it to a network path.  That is your best bet for fidelity and performance.

I hadn't thought of that I will check with PreSonus.

Thanks,

Well this is quite weird.  I have a new iMac that I hadn't put on the network yet.  I loaded it up and joined it to the Active Directory domain and the Open Directory domain and then logged in as a standard user and I was able to record a mic plugged in through the Firebox to a network share.  When I took the same unit and placed it where the others are in our Midi lab, when I logged in the dock was empty but I was still able to record.  When I logged into the same machine with a standard account I got my dock and I was able to record.  It's weird that I can log into one machine and it works and another machine it doesn't even though I'm logging into the same domain and access the same network shares.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Turns out to be a latency issue with having the profile on the network.  I turned on roaming profiles on the Mac Server and now they work locally then it backs up when the logoff.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My suggestion was that Prosonus does not support recording to the network -- that is because of latency althought I didn't specifically say that.  That seems worthy of some points since it is the correct answer.
