Turn on auditing of file deletion on W2k3 server (or all file access), then check security event log (increase size of event log, it will fill up very quickly)

I have a client that has a windows 2003 file server fully patched and 20 mac users connecting via smb but the users are reporting that files are Mysterious Disappearing and there is no pattern to this behaviour its really strange and most of the files seem to be quark or photoshop files?
has anyone any ideas on where to start with this one?

Hi Nostrasystems..
One possible explanation for this is that you may have one or two rogue users not using your specified SMB protocol to log on to the server. If an SMB user saves a file and then someone else logs on using AFP and changes the file and resaves it, to the SMB user, the file will have effectively disappeared and vice versa.
As a first step I'd recommend checking how each of your users is logging on. You're bound to find someone is using a different protocol to everyone else and that will confirm the cause of the disappearing files.
Make sure you reassert to all users, particularly any freelancers and any team heads responsible for freelancers, that they must use log in using the company standard - which of course should be either SMB or AFP, but not a mixture, if you want to avoid these problems.
