Question

How do I export imail to Outlook 2007?

Asked by: IZeroIn

I want to export all of my Mail 3.5 Mailboxes from my OS X 10.5.5 into my Outlook 2007 on my new Dell Vostro that has Vista. Mail does not have an Export tab only an Import Mailboxes tab under File. Can someone advice me on the steps necessary to export from my Apple and then how to import into my PC. I would appreciate it.

In your OSX User Home folder .. look for the Library folder
inside you'll see 2 folders .. Mail & Mail Downloads.
Copy these 2 onto the Vista PC

Inside the Mail folder will be a series of folders with MBOX files.  These are the Mailbox files.

I'm not 100% sure if Outlook imports MBOX files .. but they are the same as the files used by the Thunderbird email client.

In the past I've imported the MBox files to Thunderbird and then used Outlook to import from Thunderbird.

eoinosullivan has the first part right, now we just need to get it into outlook. The following link should provide all the information you need:

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Sorry for the delay on returning back for follow-up. There will be delays in between my comments, so bare with me. I would appreciate it. Thank you for getting back with me both of you. I downloaded the Thunderbird and copied my .mbox files from my Mac to a flash drive.

When I went to import, I got stumped. It does not have the option to import .mbox. It gives the options: Communicator 4.x, Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express. Could I import the .mbox files into Eudora or what about this Communicator 4.x ; then, into Outlook 2007? I have Vista with their mail option as Windows Mail and no longer Outlook Express which would make this easier, right? What do you suggest?

You can use mbox2eml which is part of IMAPSize to convert the mbox files to eml files. You can get this program and more information here:

Good luck.

andrew_aj1 - I already gave the links to mbox2eml in my comment #23103087 above.

When I opened the mbox folders that I loaded on my flash drive, there are emlx files in these mbox files. When I ask Windows Mail because I cannot use Outlook Express on Vista, it does not give me the ability to import emlx files. It gives me the option for Microsoft Exchange, Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail 7. None of these programs so far offers me the option to import mbox folders or emlx files, specifically, only mail programs. Still need help figuring this out. Thank you all.

All you should need to do is rename those files. I would keep a safe copy of them and used a copied version to do this - just to be safe.

All you really need to do is rename the files. The following link will tell you how to do this on a mac:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/import_export/convertemlx.html

On a Windows box all you need to do is open a command prompt, browse to the directory and type the following command:

rename *.emlx *.eml

I hope this helps. Good luck.
