Question

Airport Base Station freezing -- all LEDs solid green

Asked by: coreyit

Hi experts,

I have an Apple Airport Base Station (graphite w/, I believe, firmware version 1.3) that I've recently modified to use PPPoE to get my DSL connection NAT to make that available to multiple wireless Windows machines.

The problem is, after an hour or so (I haven't checked yet to see if the timing is regular) the Base Station freezes up with all LEDs solid green. I'm not sure if it's just overheating or if it gets confused somehow.

I just set this all up last night and had this happen twice while playing around with various apps (Windows XP Remote Desktop, P2P apps, network share tranfers). After the second time, I rebooted the Base Station (by unplugging) and left only one machine on using the network over the night. When I woke up this morning, it was frozen again.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance,
corey

How exactly did you "modify" it? Have you done a reset via the reset button?

by: coreyitPosted on 2002-08-29 at 21:06:00ID: 7250494

Sorry,
what I mean is that I modified the settings so that it would be using PPPoE so that my machines could share my DSL connection. Previously PPPoE was running on, either, my tower or my laptop.

Ok, and have you done a reset via the instructions in the manual?

by: coreyitPosted on 2002-09-04 at 20:46:46ID: 7263447

When I first purchased it (used) I reset it with the reset switch. Now I am just changing the settings.

You probably need to do it again.

Also, if all else fails you may want to check the serial on your Base Station. Serials starting with PW940 ...PW952 can be returned for repair.  Check here http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/Repair.html

It seems that the problem may be related to outgoing traffic. I'd really love to know if anyone has heard of all the LEDs turning solid green before. They are definitely not flickering at all and everything I've come across with regards to overheating, etc. describes different behavior for the lights.

Anyway, if anyone can provide info in that vein, it'd be appreciated. Otherwise, I'll be sure to get back sooner this time to close out the question.

Alright, a few things.  There's the chance a complete hardware reset is needed.  A guide to it is avaailable here:  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58613.  Note: You _will_ need a mac to do this, maybe borrow's a buddy's laptop.  It can be done over ethernet, you'll just get a warning that you don't have the aiport hardware installed, ignore that.  If this doesn't work, take it to an Apple Sertified Service Center, and hope you are within the year warranty.

The Airport Base Station section on my site has evolved a bit. Therefore, the link referenced above will no longer work. It's probably easier to just go to top <a href="http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/index.html>Airport Base Station Page</a>.

As for your problem, there might be several solutions. For one, the firmware you are using is very old. If memory serves me correctly, v1.3 was the first time that Apple supported PPPoE, so the results might be pretty buggy. I'd recommend uploading a new firmware.

If you are really wed to the PC platform, you may even consider using the Lucent base station configuration software. The guts of a Apple graphite base station are identical to a RG1000, RG1100, and AP500 so the firmware and configuration software should work.
