I had a problem with using my Mac with a wireless Linksys router. When I bought the router, I had to call technical support to get the airport card on my Mac to talk to my router. Everything was fine until I did some traveling where a tech person in the place I visited changed some settings to work with the local network. When I returned home, my machine wouldn't work with the router. I could talk to router itself, and my computer reported that I had a connection to the internet. But browers didn't work, nor could I ping anyplace. Then I called Linksys, only to be told that they don't support Mac OSX! That was a real shocker.
After several more calls to Linksys, I found finally someone who knew Macs. He gave me a solution that seems to work. I am curious is this is the best possible solution. Here are the details:
Computer: a G4 Mac powerbook running OSX 10.3.9.
Router: a Linksys WRT54GS v4, Firmware version 1.50.3.
To configure the airport to work with the router, proceed as follows:
* Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > TCP/IP
* Select "Manually" from the Configure IPv4 menu.
* Set the IP address to something like 192.168.1.105. This will depend on how many other computers use the network.
* Set the DNS servers to 192.168.1.1 and 4.2.2.2
* Since this configuration will only work with a Linksys router in a specific environment (such as your house or apartment), save this configuration as a "New Location"
Since Linksys makes a variety of routers, I am curious to hear if this solution will work for other models besides WRT54 GS. I am also curious if other people have experienced the frustration of trying to get Mac help from Linksys. To me, what's especially frustating is that some of the Linksys tech people DO know Macs and can be very helpful.
